Milan Pro (the Genesis version of the Adaline theme sold on StudioPress) received an update adding Jetpack Featured Content functionality and fixing a Masonry bug appearing on archive pages with featured images.

The original approach used a “Featured Content” widget area designed to house two “Genesis — Featured Posts” widgets — one for a single featured post and another for a row of four featured posts below.

Two primary problems emerged:

Tedious Setup

Each Genesis Featured Posts widget required very specific configuration. “If even one setting was off, it could make the whole featured content section look off.” Since this section defines Milan Pro’s distinctive appearance, misconfiguration proved problematic.

Featured posts were not excluded from the main loop

This generated the most common support requests. Featured posts appeared both in the featured section and again below in the main loop.

With Jetpack Featured Content, “the latest five featured posts are automatically excluded from the main loop, and any featured posts older than that will seamlessly transition to the main loop.”

The migration process is opt-in:

  1. Install Jetpack (optionally with Development Mode enabled)
  2. Delete widgets in the “Featured Content” widget area
  3. Navigate to Customizer -> Featured Content and select the previously-used category

“No need to ‘backup’ your old Genesis Featured Posts widget settings. No need to re-categorize older featured posts to get them to show up in the main loop anymore. No more repeated posts. It just works.”
